When the special school began in 2002, the hardest part was not teaching. It was finding children at all — many families in the surrounding villages had never been told that education was an option.
The first learners to enrol were Ruchita Bareley, Roshni Sharma, Priyanka Parey and Sheelu Sarathe. As the organisation records it, their parents “gave a good jerk to the society” by refusing to hide their children's disability and seeking admission openly.
That decision set the pattern for everything that followed: annual door-to-door surveys from 2001 onwards, awareness camps, and a school that grew from four learners to a sanctioned intake of 75.
